Choosing a Major

First, research and identify the gifts and talents you have been given. Each person has unique skills that come naturally. This is the most difficult part of choosing a major: Most people have not researched themselves well enough to identify their natural talents and skills.

Second, it is wise to choose a major that is in line with your natural abilities and interests. Your chances of success are far greater when you're developing or using your natural talents and when you enjoy what you are studying.

Thinking StudentThird, apply yourself to learning and development. Most talents and natural skills can be greatly enhanced and developed by further training. Invest in yourself by getting the best education and training possible.

Finally, choose a major which lines up with your personal value system. It is always best to have a vocation which not only provides an income, but also rewards your conscience with fulfillment and peace of mind.

In summary, when choosing a major in college ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What do you enjoy doing?
  2. What do you do well?
  3. What does the world need?
  4. Does it bring peace of mind?

Additional Things to Consider

Try looking into report cards, hobbies and interests, parents' talents, parents' occupation, awards achieved, self-inventory exams, your patriarchal blessing, other Priesthood blessings, and work experience to determine possible majors and careers that you would be most interested in.

Self-assessments and major information can be found with high school counselors, college career centers, and online.
